Does my child have to consume maintenance doses of their allergens for the rest of their life?

In order to ensure long-term, indefinite tolerance, patients must maintain a minimal dose of their once previously allergic foods. Unlike traditional OIT, this dose will decrease in frequency over time. Upon graduation, patients will typically be required to eat a several times a week or weekly dose of the lead food in each group of their most severe allergens. For most patients, this will eventually drop down to a few times a month. Ultimately, patients will typically achieve a once-a-month dosing cycle. Though there is a minimum dose requirement for maintenance, there is no limit to the amount of the allergens that can be consumed. True food freedom means patients are able to eat large quantities of their previously allergic foods without fear of reaction!
